Deale Elementary School

Key Challenges to Student Success

  • The students who attend Deale Elementary School are influenced daily by events, situations, and circumstances that occur at home and in their neighborhood.  While there are numerous factors that contribute to student achievement at Deale Elementary, the school leadership team has narrowed its focus to the following challenges to student success, with the acknowledgement that this is not an all-inclusive list and that some students may be affected by other opportunities or issues in their young lives.

This school's key challenges to student success are also noted in the boxes shown below.

  • Traditional MSDE and/or school-based student challenges

    • Attendance Rates
    • LEP (Limited English Proficiency) students
    • Quarterly Assessments scores - English
    • Quarterly Assessments scores - Mathematics
    • PARCC Scores - Mathematics (Elementary grades 3, 4, 5)
    • PARCC Scores - English/Language Arts (Elementary grades 3, 4, 5)

The 2017-2018 school year was a huge success at Deale Elementary. We were recognized for double digit gains in the percentage of our students meeting or exceeding expectations on our statewide PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) testing and for decreasing the percentage of students not meeting expectations. Additionally, Deale ranked in the top 25% of Anne Arundel County schools for the percentage of students meeting or exceeding standards in Language Arts and just below that point in Math. These scores are a clear indication of student learning.

Our staff of skilled, caring educators is thrilled with the learning taking place and the progress being made at our school! Deale is certainly a place where children thrive! The student population of Deale Elementary is roughly 86% Caucasian, 2% African American, 8% Hispanic

and 5% Multiracial;. Our community is very diverse socioeconomically. As we equip our students to embrace the challenges of an ever-changing world, our goal is to purposefully prepare them to be outstanding members of their community, wherever that may be. To that end, teaching our students to value diversity along with the skills, traditions and cultures that people from around the world bring to our lives is a priority at Deale Elementary School. Our students will appreciate, embrace, and value those difference as they begin to determine their role in creating a better world.

Welcome to Deale Elementary School! As we reviewed our data, several things were apparent. First, we are not very ethnically diverse and given our focus on preparing students to be effective, contributing members of our society, we want to expose them to diversity and equip them to thrive in the modern, diverse workplace. We also shared an expectation that more of our students should be scoring at the highest levels on county and statewide testing. To that end, we identified an area of weakness in our student’s ability to analyze and effectively respond to written prompts pertaining to questions requiring two-part responses. We are focusing student attention to that area and focusing on advanced learner strategies as we move students towards exceptional performance.

  • Non-Traditional Socio-Economic Challenges

    • Families in Crisis (mental, physical emotional, financial)
    • Substance Abuse
    • Inclusion of Triple E (EEE)

These factors result in a wide range of student experiences outside of the school setting. Some of our students have a extensive, varied and rich experiences while other have few experiences outside of the immediate Deale area. Thus, we want to bring cultural experiences into our school to provide opportunities and exposure to the diverse world around us.
