Quarterfield Elementary School

Key Challenges to Student Success

  • The students who attend Quarterfield Elementary School are influenced daily by events, situations, and circumstances that occur at home and in their neighborhood.  While there are numerous factors that contribute to student achievement at Quarterfield Elementary, the school leadership team has narrowed its focus to the following challenges to student success, with the acknowledgement that this is not an all-inclusive list and that some students may be affected by other opportunities or issues in their young lives.

This school's key challenges to student success are also noted in the boxes shown below.

  • Traditional MSDE and/or school-based student challenges

    • Attendance Rates
    • Discipline Rates
    • Numbers of FARMS students
    • LEP (Limited English Proficiency) students
    • Special Education student enrollment
    • Quarterly Assessments scores - English
    • Quarterly Assessments scores - Mathematics
    • PARCC Scores - Mathematics (Elementary grades 3, 4, 5)
    • PARCC Scores - Mathematics (Middle grades 6, 7, 8)
    • PARCC Scores - English/Language Arts (Elementary grades 3, 4, 5)

  • Non-Traditional Socio-Economic Challenges

    • Socio-Economic Issues (employment, income levels, housing costs)
    • Limited English proficiency for students and/or families
    • Families in Crisis (mental, physical emotional, financial)

Key Challenge #1:  Support for our Students and Families

Since the 2008 recession, our society has seen higher levels of poverty, as wages have not been able to keep pace with the overall higher cost of living. Within the past five years, Quarterfield Elementary School has encountered a gradual rise in student poverty levels of about 8%. Currently, 37% of our students qualify for the federal Free and Reduced Price School Meals (FARMS) program. Students who experience poverty tend to struggle to focus in school, and, often, to even attend school. When students struggle to have their basic needs met, they are often unable to learn even when they attend school regularly.

For these reasons, we have partnered with local organizations and agencies to provide additional support to students in need. For example, our school is able to provide a small group of students with some level of weekend nutrition through our “Backpack Buddies” programs. Additionally, many students are provided with necessary school supplies for the start of the school year as well as with other necessities, such as winter coats and assistance at holiday times. Key Challenge #2:   Support for English Language Learners

We continue to provide resources to support students for whom English is not their native language. Currently about 13% of our students qualify to receive services as English Language Learners.  EL students have difficulty meeting traditional benchmarks of academic success as they struggle with challenging language barriers. It is challenging for EL students to master content, such as reading on grade level or complex math problems, when their are not proficient in the English language. Our ELA Teacher will provide supports to help our students build their proficiency with the English language in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. We also work to support the needs of our non English speaking families at Quarterfield through before and after school student and parent programs. [Indicators 1, 5]

Key Challenge #3: Providing Social and Emotional Support

We have noticed that more students each year experience social and emotional challenges. Because our students are so young, they are not equipped to manage such challenges on their own. When students struggle emotionally, they cannot learn effectively. They can become distracted and consumed by their emotions when these needs are not met. We strive to ensure that our school environment provides our students with opportunities to learn in a safe and positive environment.  We also work to provide our students with appropriate social and emotional supports as needed. Currently, our school staff has a full-time School Counselor, a part-time School Psychologist, and a Learning Lab staff member who provides support in  social-emotional learning. We also partner with Villa Maria to provide counseling and family services to Quarterfield students and their families. Participation in the Second Step program further supports the social-emotional growth of our students by providing students with the skills they need to become caring, confident and capable learners and problem-solvers.
