Who We Are: Our Community and School Culture
-
Each of our schools’ leadership teams analyzed the factors that impact their students’ ability to engage deeply and achieve academic success. They shared stories of their students and families, some of whom are facing serious challenges associated with physical wellness, social-emotional stability, unique learning needs, family security, mental health, violence, and food/housing uncertainties. They discussed the obstacles that their students face daily when preparing to come to school on time, ready to learn.

Questions such as the following drove discussions around Anne Arundel County:
- What are the challenges and obstacles that negatively affect our students’ engagement and achievement most significantly and why?
- Are we analyzing our data and listening closely to learn about all of our students when we seek to understand our learners’ social-emotional and academic struggles?
- How do cultural differences, language challenges, transportation difficulties, health problems, and frequent family relocation (mobility) serve as obstacles to school success for our students?
- What resources and supports are available within AACPS and across our county to support students and families in need? How do we help our families receive the supports they need?
Our School Culture
-
Below is the school’s story as seen through the eyes of school leaders. They discuss the culture of their school and the community.
Shipley’s Choice is a true community school. Our staff works to foster a sense of community throughout the school day, using Morning Meetings and other routines to foster a sense of community and build relationships. The positive school culture is rooted in the school's vision statement: to create a nurturing, collaborative learning community that engages and inspires students to persevere and achieve. This statement was crafted collaboratively by teachers, staff, and community members to capture the essence of the school and reflect the growth mindset philosophy that is embraced by the community. Working together, the school community instills morals in its students and inspires a love of learning, self, and others.
The SCES school culture is also promoted through a variety of programs that foster leadership, kindness, and relationships throughout the school. Some of the most popular programs include the Sharks and Pups Peer Mentor Program, which pairs intermediate students with primary students to offer academic and social support, and Shining Sharks, in which students, teachers, and families recognize positive behaviors in others. Educators also go out of their way to foster positive social behaviors through friendship and social skills groups and working with students before and after school.

Families are a vital reason for the positive school culture at SCES. Parents are devoted to their children's academic success and well-being, and work as partners on the collective journey of the school community. There are high expectations from parents as well as teachers, and there is a high level of parent involvement. The passion for education within the Shipley’s school community is evident, and there is a sense of competitiveness that encompasses athletics, extra-curricular activities, and academics. Parents devote countless hours volunteering to support learning, as well as to support the efforts of the PTA. There is a high level of community support and community desire for transparency and inclusivity. The majority of teachers feel a sense of connectedness, consequently, they are invested in the school and their students.
