    Key Challenge #1:  Social-Emotional Learning

Even though our students arrive each day ready to learn and we have an exceptional teaching staff and a highly supportive community, there are still challenges to student success. One of the key challenges for Shipley’s Choice Elementary School is  to continue fostering high levels of academic success while meeting the needs of the whole learner, specifically students’ social-emotional needs. While our students excel and achieve tremendous academic success, the challenge faced by many of our students is in finding a healthy balance between high academic performance and perfection. Our goal is to provide Shipley’s Choice Elementary students with social-emotional skills to help them develop a sense of community and belonging. In addition, through social-emotional learning our students will develop self-awareness, self-control and interpersonal skills to help them navigate everyday academic and social challenges and succeed at school and in life.

Routines to foster a sense of community and belonging include reviewing expected behaviors, such as the “Shark Code,” and recognizing students who are able to work and play together as “Shining Sharks.” In addition, mindfulness techniques have become a standard practice, with students practicing breathing and other techniques to calm themselves.
