Monarch Academy Glen Burnie

Key Challenges to Student Success

  • The students who attend Monarch Academy - Glen Burnie are influenced daily by events, situations, and circumstances that occur at home and in their neighborhood.  While there are numerous factors that contribute to student achievement at Monarch Academy - Glen Burnie, the school leadership team has narrowed its focus to the following challenges to student success, with the acknowledgement that this is not an all-inclusive list and that some students may be affected by other opportunities or issues in their young lives.

This school's key challenges to student success are also noted in the boxes shown below.

  • Traditional MSDE and/or school-based student challenges

    • Special Education Student Enrollment
    • Quarterly Assessment scores - Mathematics
    • PARCC Scores - Mathematics (Elementary grades 3, 4, 5)
    • PARCC Scores - English/Language Arts (Elementary grades 3, 4, 5)
    • PARCC Scores - Mathematics (Elementary grades 6, 7, 8)
    • PARCC Scores -  (Elementary English/Language Arts (Grades 6, 7, 8)

Key Challenge #3: Special Education Student Enrollment

Monarch Academy has a slightly higher percentage of students receiving specialized educational services than traditional neighborhood schools in AACPS.  Our child-centered approach, creativity, and supportive staffing model are attractive to parents who seek something different for their children. We continue to work collaboratively with our in-house staff and with the support of the Children’s Guild, EL Education, and AACPS to find the supports and structures needed to meet the varied needs of our students. (Indicators 5, 6)

    Key Challenge #1: PARCC/MCAP Scores

As a charter school, we have the space to be innovative and explore varied approaches to instruction. This most often results in exciting and meaningful experiences for students. However, innovation and creativity can at times create gaps and inconsistencies. Our PARCC/MCAP scores do not YET represent the value of our instructional approach, specifically with students who receive specialized educational services.

As we move forward, it is our aim to produce engaging, meaningful, and memorable learning activities that reach the MSDE grade-level standards consistently in every grade and for every student and group of students so that a quality learning experience includes both rigor and engagement. To that end, we adopted the AACPS math curriculum and the EL Education language arts curriculum. Through this choice, we hope to best prepare our students academically and maintain our focus on students and our culture. (Indicators 5, 6)

  • Non-Traditional Socio-Economic Challenges

    • Inclusion of programs of choice

Because we are a school of choice, it is essential that we demonstrate to families through comparable measures that we are an excellent educational choice for their child. Doing so would show PARCC/MCAP scores at or above the district average and equitable results for all student groups.

  • HISTORICAL SCHOOL & COMMUNITY CHALLENGES THAT HAVE INFLUENCED THE WRITING OF THIS SCHOOL'S STORY

    • Access (or lack of access) to community academic support programs

Key Challenge #2: Access to community programs

Because we are a charter school that pulls from all of Anne Arundel County, we do not have the easy access to families that neighborhood schools experience. Our students and families may travel one hour each way to school. For this reason, our after school activities are often limited to those students whose parents can provide transportation. Though we plan many events for families during and after school, it is sometimes difficult for families to participate. This limits the connection between the home and school, as students are less able to attend after school and evening programming and parents are less available for volunteer opportunities.
