THE WORK OF OUR STRATEGIC PLAN 2018-2023

Overlook Elementary School

  • When each school began to plan their important work based on AACPS’s 2018-2023 Strategic Plan during the spring of 2018, school teams reflected on their school culture, their community, and the key factors contributing to student achievement.  Each school was then asked to consider which Strategic Plan Indicators would have the greatest positive impact for their students. School leadership teams selected indicators and developed plans to focus and guide their efforts.  Please come with us on our journey as we describe why, what, and how we do our work to serve our students and families of our school.

Overlook Elementary's School Story

  • Overlook Elementary is the hidden jewel of Anne Arundel County.  Our school is located in Linthicum, Maryland and “overlooks” Baltimore City with a breathtaking view of Charm City’s skyline.  Overlook first opened its doors in 1955 to serve the Linthicum area, and while our demographics have changed, our impact as a community school has not.

Generation after generation of families have been students at Overlook.  It is not uncommon to hear students comment that their parents and grandparents were also students at Overlook.  We currently serve approximately 400 diverse students in Pre-Kindergarten through 5th grade. They are greeted by an eager and excited staff who care deeply for their students, academically, socially, and emotionally.  We work tirelessly to partner with the community in order to provide more opportunities for our students and their families.

Overlook Elementary School participates in the Arts Empowered Minds Initiative (AEMI) program that is utilized to increase access to high-quality arts-integrated learning opportunities for students and teachers.  Overlook participates in artist residencies through Young Audiences that invites artists to create hands on experiences for students.  Through AEMI, teachers increase their capacity to use arts integration in the classroom through professional development opportunities at the Chesapeake Arts Center. We know that learning through the arts engages students at high levels which correlates greatly with increases in achievement across the disciplines.

From day to day, students, staff, and volunteers work together to create an engaging learning environment.  Students learn through hands-on activities that connect to the real world. Our staff works endlessly to meet students at their instructional level in order to move them forward on the learning continuum.  Volunteers work to support students and staff by preparing materials, reading aloud to groups of students during lunch, or supervising them on field trips.
