ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR READING & MATH

  • In order to ensure that all students are prepared for college, career, and community, AACPS works to provide additional support to students in literacy and mathematics. AACPS leveraged ESSER grant funds to address learning loss by securing access to i-Ready for all students in Grades K-8. This computer-adaptive tool provides both a math and reading diagnostic and personalized lesson pathways. i-Ready's online K - 8 lessons provide tailored instruction that meets students where they are in their learning journey and encourages them along the journey of developing new reading and math skills. Visit our AACPS i-Ready website for additional information. In addition to i-Ready, AACPS also provides supports through:

    • Differentiated literacy programs that address the individual needs of students that follow the approaches grounded in the Science of Reading. Using DIBELS data, primary grade students follow either the Fountas and Pinnell Phonics, Spelling and Word Study Program or the Wilsons Fundations Program.
    • Creating lifelong readers by leveraging the results of the F&P Assessment system to progress monitor elementary student progression in literacy and using the Study Sync Curriculum to build a love of reading and literacy in our middle school students. District funds are used to create diverse classroom libraries and we use Title I funds are used to enhance these classroom collections. All students in Title I funded schools receive summer reading materials to help build their own love of reading and ready access to reading material in their homes.
    • Helping students build a conceptual understanding of mathematics that engages them through the Concrete Representational Abstract (CRA) model (K-12). Through this instruction, centered on physical and virtual manipulatives, students learn the why behind mathematics rather than just a formula to solve problems. Through the application of mathematics in STEM instruction and co-curriculars, students build a love of mathematics grounded in a deep understanding of their real-world connections.

TUTORING & SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION

  • In order to ensure that all students are prepared for college, career, and community, AACPS uses Blueprint and ESSER grant funds to provide additional supplemental instruction and tutoring for students in Grades K-12. In the 2022-2023 school year, AACPS will employ 55 educators who will provide small group instruction to students identified as at risk for reading difficulties based on a reading screening. These students will receive Orton-Gillingham in groups of 4:1. Orton-Gillingham is a research-based practice that builds strong foundational literacy skills to ensure students are prepared to transition from learning to read to reading to learn.

In addition to this transitional supplemental instruction, AACPS also provides supports through:

    • Structured tutoring programs for students in Grades 4-8 which focus on literacy and mathematics. These tutoring programs are both in-person and virtual and allow students to build relationships with instructors who then provide customized support for students.
    • Virtual tutoring programs for Grades 6-12 that provide support for core subjects at all levels, including support for students in Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) courses. This tutoring allows students to receive help in building prerequisite skills as well as help with homework and completing projects.
    • Community and School Based Programs that serve as hubs that promote positive, equitable outcomes by connecting students, families, and school communities with local supports and resources to help them thrive. Community Schools offer wraparound services for students and their families that go beyond traditional classroom education. AACPS currently has 23 Community School Program sites.

9TH GRADE TRACKER SYSTEM

  • In order to ensure that all students are Career and College Ready (CCR), AACPS is developing a 9th Grade Tracker system that will help identify students who need support to become CCR by the end of Grade 10. MSDE will provide districts with requirements for the tracker beginning in SY 22 - 23. For the September 1, 2022 submissions, districts were required to submit an on-track 9th Grade report that aligned with the requirements of the federal ESSA plan. Maryland's ESSA plan requires schools to identify the number of first-time 9th grade students who have earned at least 4 credits in any of the following, by the end of their 9th grade year.

    • Mathematics
    • English Language Arts
    • Science
    • Social Studies
    • World Languages
